OBJECTIVES:

  1. Introduce the word "zebra"
  2. Read sentences with the word "zebra"

MATERIALS:
  1. Pocket chart
  2. Hand puppet
  3. Alphabet book like Dr. Seuss's ABC
  4. Word ring with the words from the previous lessons that need review.
  5. One word card with the word "zebra" in lower case letters
  6. Sentence Strips

  7. Pictures on 5"x8" index cards

  8. Objects

  9. Worksheets 1-33A, 1-33B, 1-33C

PROCEDURE:

  1. Letter Names
    1. Sing the alphabet song with the students a couple of times as the puppet carefully touches each letter on your display. Make sure the students slow down when they come to L, M, N, O, P and the letters T, U, V. One good way to do this would be to have the students clap when they sing the letters N and U.
    2. Read a good Alphabet Book like Dr. Seuss's ABC during story time.

  2. Phonemic Awareness
    1. Help the students say the words on the word ring sound by sound. For example point to the letters in the word "apple" as you say the sounds /a/ /ple/. Then have the students say the sounds with you.

  3. Review The Words On The Word Ring
    1. Have all the students read the words together.
    2. If your group is small enough, have each student read the words. Otherwise choose students you feel need the most help.

  4. Introduce The Word "zebra"
    1. Start by showing the students a picture of a zebra and asking them what it is. If there are second language learners, be sure "zebra" is identified in both English and the primary language but put the emphasis on the English.
    2. Demonstrate to the students the sign for "zebra". Explain the fact that the sign for "zebra" illustrates stripes of a zebra. Make sure all the students can correctly sign the word "zebra" as they say it.
    3. Now show the students the word "zebra" and explain that "this is the word for zebra". Have the students say and sign the word "zebra" again as you hold a word card next to the zebra. Then put a word card for "zebra" in the pocket chart below the picture of a zebra.
    4. Call on individual students to say sentences with the word "zebra" while you hold up the word card. Have the class repeat each sentence. Make sure the students emphasize and sign the word "zebra" each time they say it.

  5. Read Sentences With The Word "zebra"
    1. Place the sentences from the materials list above in the pocket chart. And place the objects and pictures on the floor or on a nearby table.
    2. Have all the students read the sentences together.
    3. Choose individual students to help the puppet find and read the new word for the day in the sentences.
    4. Then choose individual students to read the sentences and find and pick up the corresponding objects and pictures.

  6. Seat Work
    1. Have each student do Worksheets 1-33A and 1-33B.

FOLLOW-UP:

  1. Review Sessions
    1. After the lesson is over, pin up copies of the day's words and phrases around the room where the students can see them.
    2. Have the students say and sign the words at least twice during the day.

  2. Homework
    1. Give each student Worksheet 1-33C to do at home.
    2. Tell the students to show their families how to read and sign the words.
